The art of iron in the hands of a master

24 September 2025

In a city where history touches every stone, few things impress as much as the art of someone who has worked iron with his own hands for more than eighty years. The Royal Mint of Segovia is hosting this year 2025 an extraordinary exhibition that pays tribute to Elías de Andrés, one of the great references of artistic forging in Spain.

Known for his mastery of iron and his deep respect for his craft, Elías de Andrés has created a unique legacy throughout his life. His work combines the solidity of tradition with a sculptural sensibility that transcends the purely artisanal. This exhibition presents more than one hundred pieces that summarize a career marked by patient work, the silence of the workshop and the creativity contained in each blow of the hammer.

The exhibition allows not only to observe, but also to experiment. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, between half past eleven and one o’clock and noon, the artist himself offers live demonstrations. These are sessions in which the public can watch the forging process, listen to the sound of the anvil, see how a shape is born under fire and understand up close an art that has accompanied architecture, sculpture and daily life for centuries.

The space that houses it is no coincidence. La Real Casa de la Moneda, a former 16th century factory, has within its walls a direct relationship with traditional trades and manual production. There, among the old machines and the murmur of the Eresma River, iron takes on a new protagonism. The exhibition is organized in different thematic areas that cover furniture, grilles, crosses and decorative works. It also includes original tools of the artist and documentation on his work.

For those who enjoy traditional crafts, with life stories woven between tools and raw materials, this exhibition is a unique opportunity. It is also a silent tribute to dedication, to constant effort and to the beauty that comes from a job well done.
